Two underdog trustbusters running for Congress
When Tim Wu and I ran for office as innocents 11 years ago, we were determined to make antitrust part of our platform. We even held an event for ripping up monopolist cable bills. But it was hard to break through--while people understood that corporate power was crushing them, the press didn't really.
The combination of Covid, AI-pricing games, junk fee slop, Trump corruption of the media and the Trump-big tech nexus--and of course the incredible leadership of Lina Khan at the FTC--means that today, antitrust is mainstream politics.
In the last congressional cycle, the antimonopoly fever really hit--I looked at the ads for the top seven races that overperformed Kamala Harris, and found that in all but one, the candidates made a big deal out of opposing mergers or taking on corporate monopolies.
This year, there are a number of exciting Congressional candidates, I want to highlight two in tough primaries, so you can learn more about them and support them:
- Reed Showalter
- Dylan Hewitt
Reed has worked in Congress investigating the monopolistic abuses of Big Tech, blocked dangerous mergers at the Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Department of Justic,e and pushing back against corporate power in every part of the economy. He knows how corruption works, and he knows how to stop it.
I’ve watched Reed’s campaign closely, and what stands out is simple: he tells the truth about who is rigging the system, and he’s not afraid to name names. It matters because working people in IL-7 deserve a champion who won’t shrink from a fight.
But Reed is up against a political machine that has money, name recognition, and every establishment advantage.

Dylan Hewitt is ready to take on the big bullies, support local jobs, and power the local economy in one of my favorite areas of America, the North Country of New York. He supports Medicare for All and sees corporate consolidation for what it is: a direct attack on our freedom, our democracy, and our economic future.
He rejects AIPAC money and Super PAC politics--and will be an amazing replacement for Elise Stefanik

I'll be honest--I can't promise you either will win. But I can promise that both have a real chance and that the Democratic party needs a whole new generation of corporate trustbusters if we are going to have a democracy!
Hope you're well,
